Questions & Answers The Surgical Experience About Anaesthesia

I'm sixteen years of age and I have wanted a nose job for a few years.

I'm 16 years of age and I have wanted a nose job for a few years now and I have never changed my opinion of having one.

When I was a young girl I banged my nose and I feel that the development of my nose shape was damaged. Every since then I have had a curved nose, which is quite big in size and the bridge of my nose has a hump on it, which is very noticeable to others.

My friends and other people have mentioned my nose shape to me, which has in the past knocked my confidence.

My question is, can I have a nose job at sixteen?

I am willing to pay and my parents have agreed for me to have a nose job.

The issue and desire related to nasal reshaping can be very valid early in life. The issue related to the timing for the surgery is slightly more complex and takes into account the rest of the facial shape as well as the development of the nose.

Although the nasal development is suitable for surgery between 16 and 17 years of age, in the majority of people, facial development is still creating significant changes in the late teens. My preference is to do this type of surgery after the age of 18, when the rate of change of the face slows down, and designing the overall changes in the context of the facial features becomes more logical.

If for instance you where to have a consultation and computerised planning for your operation at this stage, and reviewed your plans every six months until you reach the age of 18, I am quite confident that you would make alterations to your plan at each meeting.

I know it sounds cruel to tell someone you have to wait longer despite feeling uncomfortable with your appearance, but this is a decision that has implications for the rest of your life, and as such needs to be treated with a lot of consideration.

I have no objection to seeing you in consultation earlier, but with regards ideally together with one of your parents, to the treatment timing my approach would be to organise surgery around the age of 18
